DV, OV, and EV. What are they?

There are three types of SSL Certificates available on the market. Domain Validated (DV), Organization Validated (OV), and the iconic Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificate.

Each type fulfills a different purpose in the industry, however being able to tell the difference between your standard entry level certificate compared to your business level certificate can be beneficial when it comes to standing out from your competition.

DV SSL Certificates

DV SSL Certificates are the simplest SSL and easiest Certificate to receive on the market. Once installed they will secure the domain name(s) provided in the order system upon placing an order.

These are entry-level SSL certificates, best suited for securing blogs and low traffic websites. DV SSL Certificates are some of the most cost-effective certificates in the industry, however if you are wanting to promote your online business or eCommerce site with bank strength encryption you will find that the OV and EV Certificate range would be more suited for your needs (More info Below).

Validation

The validation of these SSL Certificates is simple compared to the others. They only require validation through proof of domain control. This means that upon the order being submitted to the Certificate Authority, it can be completed within minutes assuming you are able to prove you have ownership or permission from the owner of the domain name.

This can be done several ways:

Approver E-Mail: An E-Mail with authentication steps is sent to an address affiliated with the domain.

DNS CNAME Validation: We provide you with a DNS record and value to add to the web-server, then ping the record.

HTTP File Validation: We provide you with a .txt file that you place in a directory on your web-server, then ping the file.

After any of these forms of validation are completed the DV SSL Certificate is issued and ready to install.

OV SSL Certificates

OV SSL Certificates are the next step in security and trust by including your company’s details within the SSL Certificate. Through cross referencing government and third-party records, the SSL Certificate will show that your company and domain are trusted by the Certificate Authority.

These SSL Certificates are designed to secure domains owned by small and large business alike, for any website that uses a form of online shop like e-commerce. OV SSL Certificate are some of the most common certificates for business to use, only second to the EV Certificate range (See Below).

Typically, it is expected that OV SSL Certificates are delivered within 48 hours of receiving all the required identity documentation. Generally, we advise customers to allow up to 7 days to gather the required identity documentation, though, issuance can be achieved quickly if documentation is received promptly and has been known to be issued in less than 1 business day.

Validation

The Certificate Authority will validate both domain control, as with DV SSL Certificates, and the company name provided in the CSR. The Certificate Authority will check government records against the company and will also require an automated telephone verification call. This call can only be made to a phone number that is available on a third-party business directory like Dun & Bradstreet or Bloomberg.

EV SSL Certificates

EV SSL Certificates are the ultimate form of SSL Certificate. They provide a greater level of security compared to DVs and OVs. The Extended Validation SSL Standard raises the bar on verification of SSL Certificates and enables a visual display in high security browsers displaying your registered business name in the green address bar. Not only will having an EV SSL Certificate increase your search rating by Google®, but it will also instill trust in your customers as phishing scams and incidents of fraud become more common.

These SSL Certificates are a must have for any company that wishes to take itself seriously when it comes to the ever-changing web, they are designed for businesses and corporations who are looking to secure domains with high traffic online shops like e-commerce, as well as handling sensitive information and critical data like medical records or personal contact information.

Typically, it is expected that EV SSL Certificates are delivered within 48 hours of receiving all the required identity documentation. Generally, we advise customers to allow up to 7 days to gather the required identity documentation, though, issuance can be achieved quickly if documentation is received promptly.

Validation

The CA will again validate domain control and government records like with OVs. However, there are additional “Subscriber Agreement Documents” to be completed online. Also, the telephone verification call must be completed manually, and the CA must speak directly to the signer of the Subscriber Agreement, confirming their request to order the certificate as well as their employment status with the company.

All the information provided will also need to be manually reviewed by a CA agent to ensure everything has been completed correctly. Once this is complete, the SSL certificate will be issued.

Multi-domain options available

Multi-Domain EV Certificates are perfect for covering all of your domains and sub domains you require. They are able to store 250 domains and come with three initial single site domains upon purchase, with each additional domain after the initial three having a small additional cost to add to the certificate, each domain will share the prestigious green company name in the address bar allowing all of your domains to be easily trusted.

Each domain listed will share the unique features of displaying a green address bar and the registered business name in the address bar
